Abstract: In this study, the effects of experimentally induced hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism on the erythrocyte, leucocyte and haematocrit values, the amount of haemoglobin and plasma glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, creatinine and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were investigated. A total of 45 4-week-old female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) were used. The quails were divided into 3 groups as hyperthyroid, hypothyroid and the control group, with 15 quails in each. The birds in the control group were fed with unsupplemented commercial quail diet for 5 weeks. At a rate of 0.4mg/100g, Levatroxin-sodium was added into the diet of the hyperthyroid group and 0.2 g% Propylthiouracil (PTU) was added into the diet of the hypothyroid group. The experimental groups were also fed for 5 weeks. After a 5-week trial period, blood samples were taken from all quail. The mean plasma T4 level of the hyperthyroid group was increased statistically (P<0.01), while the mean plasma T_4 level of the hypothyroid group was decreased significantly (P<0.01). The number of erythrocytes and leucocytes of both experimental groups did not change, while the haemotocrit value increased (P<0.05). The increase in haemoglobin was found to be statistically significant only in the hyperthyroid group. Plasma glucose and cholesterol levels of the hyperthyroid quails did not change in comparison with the control group. However these parameters increased significantly in the hypothyroid group at the levels of P<0.05, P<0.01 respectively. While plasma triglyceride and creatinine levels of both experimental groups increased (P<0.01), the level of LDH did not change.
