Abstract: The symmetries of Yukawa couplings, without any reference to fermion mass matrices, may be used to count the observable parameters of the Yukawa Lagrangian in the standard model of electro-weak interactions. It is shown that in two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the standard model without natural flavor conservation, one must study the invariances of the fermion mass matrices as well in order to determine the number of the observable parameters of the Yukawa Lagrangian and, in particular, to determine the number of the fermion masses and the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing parameters.
