Abstract: As hypertension is one of the most common complications in diabetes mellitus, its treatment deserves great attention. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are usually preferred as the first step in treating diabetic hypertensive patients. We decided to perform this study to see the effects of different ACE inhibitors on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and show the comparison of the effects. Diabetic and nondiabetic hypertensive patients were treated with enalapril, lisinopril, silazapril or perindopril for four weeks. Fasting and postprandial blood glucose, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, insulin and c-peptide levels were measured before and after treatment, and results were compared using the student' t test. Among the groups, in the patients who took silazapril, a fall in post-prandial glucose, triglycerides and c-peptide and an increase in c-peptide levels were seen. No change in fasting glucose and insulin levels was determined. According to our comparisons we concluded that silazapril is the outstanding drug for hypertensive diabetic patients.
