On the Application of von Mises' Yield Criterion to a Class of Plane Strain Thermal Stress Problems

Abstract: A computational model is developed to estimate thermal stresses in nonlinearly hardening elastic-plastic axisymmetric systems in cylindrical polar coordinates. The model is based on von Mises' yield criterion, total deformation theory and Swift's hardening law. Various numerical examples including plane strain and generalized plane strain problems in cylinders and tubes are handled. Comparisons are made with existing analytical solutions employing Tresca's yield criterion for elastic-ideally plastic and elastic-linearly hardening systems. Parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the effect of important model parameters on the stresses and deformations.
