Abstract: Water for cities containing millions of citizens is at present being supplied mostly from surface resources. These resources are generally in different river basins, far from the city center, and are developed by means of multireservoirs planned for the single purpose of water supply. They must be investigated with the system concept both in planning and operation phases in order to provide an integrated management. This study emphasizes the operation problem of the multireservoir water supply systems. The water supply system of Istanbul is introduced. In order to find optimum operating rules for the system, dynamic programming is used and operation results with these rules are given.
