Abstract: Mold filling and fractionation of semi-solid slurries are numerically investigated. A tin lead alloy (Sn-15%Pb) is employed to fill the mold under a range of processing conditions including inflow velocity, mold geometry, nozzle diameter and fraction of the solid. Fractionation is identified from the trajectories of the particles that introduced at the mold inlet. The results showed that phase segregation or fractionation is promoted by the flow and the processing conditions. The fractionation is reduced with a cylindrical mold, high inflow velocity and low fraction of solid.
