Velocity Distribution in Channels of Rectangular Compound Cross Section

Authors: ISSAM A. AL-KHATIB

Abstract: A series of experiments have been carried out in order to measure velocity distribution in a straight symmetrical rectangular compound sections of varying floodplain width, main channel width and step height. Different dimensionless ratios of velocity distributions are obtained and related to relative depth. The geometry effect on the velocity distribution in the main channel and floodplains due to the momentum transfer between the deep section and floodplains has been investigated. The different velocity ratios were generalized and a logarithmic equation for each ratio was determined in such a way that regardless of the model type these equations can be used to calculate velocity ratios within the range of flow conditions examined in this study.
