Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the synoptic conditions for catastrophic floods to occur, due to heavy precipitations during summer months in the southern coast region of the Black Sea. For the determination of synoptic conditions, meterological data (synoptic maps and rainfall data) for the period 1980 to 1990 were used. During the summer months, particularly in June, when the temperature of the sea surface becomes higher than that of the air and the area is subject to a combination of orographic, convective and frontal precipitations some 100 mm or more of daily rainfall can be observed Rainfall of such a large scale results in heavy flooding in the mountains of Northern, Anatolia and causes loss of property and life.
