Abstract: A mathematical model of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell type, based on physical-chemical knowledge of the phenomena occurring inside the cell, was developed to study the performance at different operation variables. The effects of different operating parameters on the performance of PEM fuel cell studied using pure hydrogen on the anode side and air on the cathode side. Results with different fuel cell operating temperatures, different operating pressures and various combinations of these parameters were obtained. The possible mechanisms of the parameter effects and their interrelationships are discussed. The modeling results are compared with known experimental results. The comparison shows good agreements between the modeling results and the experimental data.
