Abstract: In this study, a theoretical model which can ensure the calculation of plastic deformation heat occured at the worn surfaces due to the friction during sliding was established and the validity of the theoretical model was investigated. Wear tests were carried out with pin-on ring system under different speed and load conditions. During the tests, the coefficient of friction and the bulk temperaures at the different places of friction pairs were measured. The total frictional heat was calculated approximately by using these values. By comparing the total heat results with the theoretical results of the plastic deformation heat, it has been understood that the mathematical model established to calculate the plastic deformation heat approximately is valid. It has been indicated that the most of the total frictional heat is dissipated by plastic deformation, and the thickness of the plastically deformed layer increases with increasing load and speed. It was found that the most important factor which increases the deformation thickness is the contact sur-face temperature.
