Abstract: The possibility of using an approximate model for numerical optimization of a PID process control system is investigated. The method is proposed for cases in which the plant transfer function is not known accurately, but a step response curve is available, a frequently encountered situation in practical applications. As an alternative to using the Ziegler-Nichols PID controller parameters based on the approximate model produced from the step response, this method produces higher performance systems with regard to the criterion of preference. The plant investigated consists of dead time and two time contants, and the optimization is carried out with regard to the three commonly used performance criteria.
