Abstract: Ferric hydrogen sulfate was used as an environmentally friendly heterogeneous acidic catalyst for the greener, 1-pot, 3-component synthesis of 1,8-dioxo-octahydroxanthene via condensation reactions between aromatic aldehydes and dimedone under solvent-free thermal and microwave irradiation as well as in aqueous media conditions in short periods of times with excellent yields. The catalyst was easily separated in simple work-up and was recycled several times without loss of reactivity under the described reaction conditions.
