Abstract: The antiviral activity of Sanicula europaea L. extract in a phage-bacterium system was investigated. We observed that the water-soluble fraction of Sanicula europaea L. extract had virucidal effects on the growth of phage T2, and that the virucidal activity of the extract increased with increasing incubation time and incubation temperature. In the presence of mono- and divalent ions in the incubation medium the virucidal activity of the extract disappeared completely. The fractions seperated from the crude extract by Sephadex gel filtration chromatography were also tested and only fractions 1 was found to be active.
