Abstract: For the protection, enhancement and management of forests for today's and future generations, an understanding of the spatial structure of forest ecosystems along with base forest management planning are necessary. In this study are presented an introduction, a description, an explanation of different approaches and the basic principles of landscape management or ecosystems management within the evolution of the forest management process. Furthermore, the issue of biodiversity or biological diversity, one of the most important factors influencing the flourishing of landscape management, is described, its basic components are presented and its effects on management planning are discussed. It is concluded that timber-oriented static forest management plans are no longer able to satisfy the needs of the socity, and thus that the dynamics of forest ecosystems and their sustainability over time and space need to be considered. Such an integrated forest landscape management program can be a reality on the ground only by the concurrent use of Geographic Information Systems and Operational: Research techniques.
