Effects of Sowing Date and Growing Methods on Some Characters in Sweet Corn

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the effects of different sowing date and growing methods on some characters in sweet corn. The research was carried out during 1993 and 1994 in Tokat. Two sweet corn hybrids were grown at three sowing dates with conventional sowing, polyethylene mulch and transplanting. Significant differences were obtained between varieties for all characters except ear length, single ear weight and fresh ear yield per decare. As the sowing date became late tasseling and maturity periods, and number of ears/da are decreased, while plant height, ear length and weight of single ear are increased. The effects of growing methods were founded significantly for all characters. Tasseling and maturity periods, plant height, ear length and weight of single ear data were founded less statistically in transplanting than the others. Conversely number of ears per decare was significantly higher in transplanting. In generally traditional sowing and mulching have had same effect.
